The people who were on the chair Thursday were all Big White employees, and had volunteered for the job, however some of them may have got in over their heads. “It’s not easy to trust a skinny little rope and swing yourself from a chair while dangling some 15 meters above the snow”, states Kris Hawryluik, Patrol Operations Manager for Big White, however according to him “the practice went very well and all the employees were safely rescued”.

If you were out skiing recently you would have seen an unusual sight on the Snow Ghost chair. Big White was training employees on the evacuation procedure for a chairlift should it become inoperable while loaded with skiers. Of course this is highly unlikely given the strict maintenance schedule that is followed by the hill, however it is comforting to know that it can be done quickly and efficiently if required.
