As a mother of two young boys aged 9 and 5 ‘fog’ is often my state of mind! For the last couple of mornings however, I’ve been able to see clearly that the fog is not in my head alone!

As the usual morning routine goes… my boys and I jumped in the car this morning to make our way down to the school. Unable to see the end of the car bonnet, let alone the end of the road, we were in for somewhat of a harrowing trip! Successful in reaching the Happy Valley carpark we all sat forward on our seats in search of our little Big White Community School … and it was - GONE! Swallowed whole by the white of the ghostly fog.

All of a sudden I HAD to wake up from my usual morning daze and clear my head of my usual fog. This morning’s fog was not my own! It was that of the mountain – it was eating it alive! The boys were extremely excited about the possibility of having a day off due to the fact that their school had disappeared!

We drove on and peered through the thick of it and just when we thought we had found the driveway leading down to the school we found our car pointing directly and precisely at a bank of snow! After a quick reverse I found myself driving around and around in circles CRINGING because I had just joined the club of ‘tools’ doing donuts in the carpark!! My young passengers thought it was ‘awesome’ but I was just living in the hope that nobody could see me! Of course they couldn’t – thank goodness for the FOG!

Much to the boys’ dismay, drop-off became a reality as the school thankfully appeared through the soupy haze. Too little, too late. My eldest cheekily suggested that I should have used the M & M’s that were sitting in the console (leftover from a recent trip to the flicks) as a trail to find my way home. As a loving and responsible parent I cannot say what I want to say to him but am thinking to myself – ‘Get the fog out of here!’
