 The 2009/10 school year at Big White Community School (BWCS) is off to a great start. This year the children and parents welcome a new teacher to the hill – Rick Gandha. Rick comes with plenty of energy and enthusiasm to tackle the challenges on the hill, and the kids are responding well. We hope Rick all the best for the coming year.The school also welcomes back Lori Petersen, who will be focusing on the younger children. Lori has been at BWCS for 9 years now, and we are very happy to have her back to inspire the children in the fantastic learning environment that is Big White. BWCS is located right on the hill, near the bottom of Lara’s Gondola in Happy Valley. The location allows the kids to ski to school if they wish, and take the Gondola home. With school hours ending early during the ski season, and a 4 day school week, the kids can usually be found playing in their 2565 acre “back yard”. Sixteen chair lifts, a tubing park, nordic skiing, snowmobiling, and an outdoor skating rink right outside of the school definitely make the playstations take a back seat. Even after the hill is closed for skiing in the spring the activities on the hill for the kids are plentiful. Are you thinking of moving to the hill? If so, BWCS always welcomes new children, and there are usually plenty moving in as the season approaches. BWCS has a very active Parent group who take an active interest in their children's education and learning experience. With the latest in computer labs and teaching tools, BWCS is well equipped to provide everything that children need to grow up in a fantastic setting that allows them to focus on “just being kids” without the pressures that are present in larger urban schools.
